August 15: The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven

On this day we celebrate that the Virgin May, "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950. The Feast of the Assumption has been observed by the Eastern Church from the 5th century, and by the Roman Catholic Church from the 7th century.

From the liturgi of The Church:

For today the Virgin Mother of Godwas assumed into heavenas the beginning and imageof your Church’s coming to perfectionand a sign of sure hope and comfort to your pilgrim people;rightly you would not allow herto see the corruption of the tombsince from her own body she marvelously brought forthyour incarnate Son, the Author of all life
