Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, February 2

Forty days after Christmas we celebrate the event which took place when the Holy Family travelled up to Jerusalem to comply with the demands of the Law that the firstborn should be presented to God.

The event is related in Luke's Gospel (Luk 2,22-39). In English this day is traditionally called Candlemass, in Norwegian "Kyndelsmesse".

In the temple we meet two persons who both are important in the history of the Church. The first was the honest and godfearing Simeon, who held Jesus in his arms and broke into a song of praise. Simeons Song (Nunc dimittis) is sung every day during Compline, the last of the Canonical Hours.

In the temple the Holy Family also met the prophetess Anna.
