Rorate Mass

The first of three Rorate masses during Advent will take place on Thursday 2 December 7:00 am, followed by breakfast in the parish hall.

This year there will also be Rorate masses in Polish, Fridays at 7 pm, starting December 3.

Rorate Masses are celebrated during Advent as votive masses to God's Mother the Virgin Mary. This means that the mass texts do not follow the normal liturgical calendar, but that there are special texts prescribed in the missal. In some places they are celebrated every day in Advent. In Spain, Germany, Hungary and Poland they have a long tradition.

In Poland they date back at least to the 13th Century. Even today, Polish children light special lanterns which they carry through the darkness to church.

The tradition has also spread to other parts of the world. In the Philippines, where the masses start at 4 am so that they finish as dawn breaks, big crowds of people gather to participate.
